Saidpur Airport is a domestic airport in Nilphamari, a Northern district of Bangladesh. Saidpur airport IATA code is SPD and ICAO ID is VGSD.
The airport is located 2 kilometer away from Saidpur city and 350 kilometer away from Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. The airport started its operation as a domestic airport in 1979 and it is managed by Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
Saidpur city was established based on the Saidpur Railway Workshop established in 1870 by the then British Government. On the course of time, the city became very busy commercial and communication hub for the surrounding districts. The city is also one of the most important economic zones in Bangladesh.
At present following airlines are operating commercial flights only to and from Dhaka city:
- Biman Bangladesh Airlines
- US-Bangla Airlines
- Regent Airways
Upon government initiatives, CAAB started upgradation work of Saidpur Airport in 2018 to transfor it from domestic to International airport. For this purpose, the concerned ministry has already acquired 912 acres of land from Saidpur upazilla of Nilphamari and Parbatipur upazilla of Dinajpur district. With the upgradation, the airport will have a runway of 12000 feet (3,700 meter) in place of 6,000 feet (1800 meter) which will make it one of the biggest runway in Bangladesh.
